I've been in band since 6th grade middle school but with music you can never stop learning. If you don't LEARN something new everyday , you sure as hell improve something every day. In 6th grade I always ahead of the class and first chair. In 7th grade i was second to last chair, except in the 8th grade band rather than the 7th. In 8th grade me and a friend always ended up fighting over first chair going back and forth between the two. Only, we didn't know too much about what being first chair/section leader actually entailed, to us it just meant superiority over the others. When i got to high school I was automatically put into Wind Symphony, which I was excited to hear that it meant that Mrs. Steed thought I had great potential. I was brought down a peg for reasons unknown to myself, for i had gone to region tryouts, and was put into the second band as the first chair, again. It was disappointing having been in a band of greatness one semester and brought down the second. I didn't give up and did the best that I could with what i was given, and did what i could to prove myself worthy of wind symphony. From Sophomore year up until this year I was placed in wind symphony.I have not only played solos, but trios and ensembles and in a clarinet choir as well. This year I am section leader and finally realizing what this means. I have to be the prime example of what people should be doing and where they should be. I must devote my time to learning my parts as quickly as possible so that others know what they must do. When others ask for help , I need to help them. I have to initiate practices and sectionals and makes sure my section has their parts down. Leadership skills are ones that i've never actually had but i had to obtain to make sure my section has all that it needs.
Learning Outcomes: #5 is stated as: Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities. I have shown a commitment to and perseverance in band by staying even when I wasn't where I wanted to be.
#4 is stated as: Worked collaboratively with others. Through trios, ensembles, and choirs I have worked with others in my section throughout the years and even some outside of my section.
#3 is stated as: Planned and initiated activities. As section leader this year I have had to plan sectionals through out this first semester alone there were about 4-5 sectionals via advisory.
#1 is stated as Increased their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth. Over the years i have increased my ability at the Clarinet , such as practicing like a mad man and learning the 4th octave in the clarinet, all my scales, chromatic, and other techniques for tryouts for the entrance of this year as first chair/section leader.
I've increased my are of growth by becoming more of a leader and taking control of situations.
